  2. Communists 1927, became a commander of Mao
  3. Zedong's Red Army, and led the Northeast
  4. People's Liberation Army in the civil war
  5. after 1945. He became defence minister 1959,
  6. and as vice chairman of the party in 1969 he
  7. was expected to be Mao's successor. But in
  8. 1972 the government announced that Lin had
  9. been killed in an aeroplane crash in Mongolia
  10. 17 Sept 1971 while fleeing to the USSR
  11. following an abortive coup attempt.
